Storyline:
Debuting in April 2020, “Extraction” arrived at a serendipitous time, displaying “Thor’s” Chris Hemsworth in a strong, dramatic style activity vehicle on Netflix at a second when Coronavirus carried venues to a crushing end. Even by the standards of the genre, the sequel, “Extraction 2,” hammers away at the same basic outline with extreme simplicity.
In fact, this film about Hemsworth’s ghastly mercenary Tyler Rake seems primarily made for people who find the “Taken” movies too intellectually taxing, down to the typical Eastern European bad guys who usually need to be shot in the head to stop them because of all the body armor.

Sam Hargrave, a stuntman and second-unit director who had doubled Chris Evans on the Avengers films, created a 12-minute continuous fight sequence that largely defined the first film.
Hargrave returns to the saddle and ups the ante with a frantic 21-minute continuous fight featuring trains, helicopters, and automobiles that resembles an “oner” (there are cuts that are skillfully obscured). For those who study such things, the effect is certainly impressive (cue Film Twitter), even though watching the movie left you with a slight hangover.
What are their differences? Rake sets out on a rescue mission to free Tinatin Dalakishvili and her two children from the Georgian prison where she and her mobster husband are being held. Again, Rake is teamed up with the deadly Nik (Golshifteh Farahani), who also causes the husband’s vengeful brother (Tornike Gogrichiani) to want revenge. Luckily, the brother has access to all kinds of heavy weapons and doesn’t mind mixing it up with anyone, even local authorities who get in his way.
That’s about it, based on the script by Joe Russo, one of the prolific brothers who directed “Avengers: Infinity War: Endgame,” who was also the project’s producer. Idris Elba, who plays Hemsworth’s “Thor” co-star, makes a cameo in the film, albeit more as a puppet master than a butt-kicker.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been warmly received by streaming services, and “Extraction” generously provides Hemsworth with a franchise in which he can both star and produce, much like Evans did in the most recent Apple action comedy “Ghosted.”
The drawback, however, is that these services appear to be so content with the promotional value of these stars that the films’ actual content is essentially secondary, at least based on the basic plotting of “Extraction 2.”
These movies do show that streamers in general and Netflix in particular are willing to pay for projects that appear to be theatrical blockbusters. Add to that the cost of a subscription even though you won’t have to get up from the couch, which is probably still a bigger investment than “Extraction 2” is worth.
Netflix’s “Extraction 2″ debuts on June 16. The rating is R.
