Storyline:

A serial killer with an ideology and mindset deeply rooted in Hindu mythology challenges a team of talented forensic experts to solve the mystery behind a series of heinous murders. This eight-part series of his is a captivating, sensual mix of gore, murder, psychological thrills and Indian mythology that will leave you wanting more before the first season is over.

Asur is Bollywood actor Arshadwarsi’s digital debut, playing the role of a seasoned forensic expert who is far from his on-screen image. Warsi plays the brooding, passionate, selfish and serious forensic scientist Dhananjai Rajput (DJ) who tries to unravel the mystery behind the murders and their connection to the killer. Arshad has done a commendable job. TV star Balun Sovti writes about the role of former DJ student and collaborator Nikhil Nar.

Balun has made a spectacular comeback after his last television appearance as a forensic expert-turned-teacher dealing with personal and professional disputes. His disheveled appearance is perfect for the atmosphere of a kind-hearted man who is always troubled by heart and mind. Both Arshad and Barun complement each other perfectly in their friendship. Besides Arshad and Barun, other actors such as Ridi Dogra, Anupriya Goenka, Amy Wag and Shalib Hashmi also gave great performances.

This crime thriller is about one of the most basic emotions: the struggle between good and evil. Every time a murder occurs, the killer asks the same question. Are we inherently evil, or does our inner evil emerge when we face difficult situations? Does the mind control the body or vice versa? If you look closely, the creators of the series have been trying to find that answer, especially in the final minutes before the climax. Nikhil’s goodness and DJ’s shades of gray help us make sense of this dilemma better, closer, and more personally.

What’s even more interesting is that the killer, aka Shub Joshi, isn’t the self-pity boy next door that makes him who he is. he is quite talented. Born into a Pandit family in Varanasi, he can memorize the Bhagavad Gita by turning the pages, but his troubled childhood forces him to choose evil within. The scene where the young, cold and stoic Shub murders his father with great precision is wonderfully creepy. Each murder was executed with precision, and while different in method, they share some similarities, such as cutting off the victim’s index finger and leaving a burr mask next to the corpse.

Shot and edited with razor-sharp precision, his two timelines that lead us into Shub’s past and DJ and Nikhil’s current challenges never feel connected at any point. There are some boring scenes, though. In some regions, intuition, astrology, and bureaucratic indifference are used as pretexts to remain unsolved. More emphasis on how these experts try to navigate their respective difficulties might have given the series a more human touch. Rather, things look fine.

With so many high-profile international series in the genre, the writers do their best to put out a compelling series, and most of the time they succeed. The story, script, camera work, and music are all right. What’s particularly noteworthy is the thrilling climax that doesn’t disappoint fans until the very end. Viewers are certainly looking forward to the second season, as there are many unanswered questions.
