Storyline:

Nick Fury, the former director of SHIELD, appears old, worn out, and worn out in Marvel’s Secret Invasion. In Secret Invasion, the first MCU film with Samuel L. Jackson as the aging spy in the lead role, Nick’s quasi-ponderous slouch at resolving the escalating Skrull issue is just the beginning of his journey. Although Jackson is as great as ever in the role, he definitely looks like some of us. Even though a rebel group of aliens may be determined to further destabilize our world and claim it as their own, it’s hard not to occasionally root for them when looking around.

G’iah, Talos’s now-grown daughter, and Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke are among “Them.” She has joined a group of rebel Skrulls, and their leader, Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), plans to start a war between Russia and America through subterfuge in order to establish Skrull dominance on Earth, which might as well become their home planet now that Nick and Carol have made it abundantly clear that they will not be having any more children.

According to the premise of the show, these Skrulls have been posing as humans in important geopolitical positions for some time. This means that they probably already have a pretty good foothold and a well-thought-out strategy.

In this regard, we are also introduced to Olivia Colman as Sonya Falsworth, a prominent MI6 agent and Fury’s former ally who is attempting to stop the evil Gravik. Her brief scene with Fury is quite charming and makes reference to their lengthy history as co-players on the global stage. However, her character does not yet have a lot to do, so we will have to wait and see how significant she becomes to the plot in the future.

Secret Invasion was definitely not made with newcomers to the MCU in mind. Everett K. Ross, played by Martin Freeman, a former CIA agent, is revealed to be a Skrull imposter at the beginning, but if you haven’t seen Captain America: In either Civil War or Black Panther, Maria Hill, played by Cobie Smulders, is shot to death in front of Nick, who is helpless. Even though Maria wasn’t really on your radar in the first place, it’s still a shocking climax.

To be fair, the MCU hasn’t really bothered to develop her character for fans over the years either. It seems like her death was the final A comical injustice during Smulders’ ten-decade Marvel film career was abruptly ended in a streaming television show to demonstrate that the situation had just become real.

The events that take place between Maria’s death and Everett’s discovery that he was a Skrull are uninteresting and plodding, and the message that if you welcome refugees into your home, they will eventually steal your jobs and become violent is at best dubious, and the show is clearly grappling with it on a thematic level.

Secret Invasion always aims to be a dark and gritty conspiracy thriller similar to Captain America, a favorite of the MCU: The Winter Soldier, but it also has a hard time getting away from the absurdity of actors running around in silly green masks. Whatever you think of Captain Marvel, the decision to incorporate the frequently out-of-date Marvel Comics villains into the MCU as friendly allies was the right one. Although your mileage may vary, I find it difficult to accept them as a real threat in their natural state against such a melancholy background.

I did question a lot of what I saw in the series opener because Secret Invasion is determined to convince us that no one can be trusted in its marketing. However, I didn’t feel like I had much time to get into the mental state where I could be truly unnerved by the surprises this episode had up its sleeve. The show warns you right away that what you’re seeing might not actually be happening the way you think it is. It was a good idea for the last big show written by Kyle Bradstreet, Mr. Robot, but those twists and turns were earned over time.

I’m not sure how the show can competently build to a climax in six episodes because here, it feels like we’re jumping into the current Skrull situation so late in the game, over four years (or 30 or so) after the events of Captain Marvel. As we spend more time with both new and old MCU characters, it may settle into its groove in the coming weeks because it is clearly designed to be a slow burn process.
