There is no rejecting that Wilson and Farmiga have come to depict two of the most famous figures of contemporary frightfulness. We somehow came to want to spend time with this couple and perhaps even to feel safe in their presence—that familiarity, down to the Warrens’ customary sculpted hairdos and old-fashioned, thoughtfully costume-designed clothes, is both comforting and captivating. In this third film, however, our affection for the Warrens and nostalgia only go so far.
It’s almost as though Chaves and Johnson-McGoldrick should have stuck with the paranormal formula and sophisticated simplicity of the franchise rather than trying to create something new. Without a central scary place, this one simply doesn’t feel like a film that has a place in “The Conjuring” universe.
