Storyline:

Peaky Blinders returns with a vengeance for a second season that improves in almost every way and builds on the solid foundation laid the previous year. With the stakes higher than any time in recent memory and the Shelby’s focusing on a rewarding economic accord in London, the 6 episodes see the Birmingham posse in far over their heads, working toward a climactic finale that welcomes the third season.

We pick up in Birmingham two years later, following the shocking finale from last year. The Peaky Blinders are in charge, and Thomas Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy, is in charge of the company. The town is shaken when Thomas’ pub, The Garrison, is destroyed in an explosion early in the first episode. Soon, it becomes clear that this is all part of a bigger plan that forces Thomas to kill a high-stakes target while expanding his criminal empire into London’s uncharted waters. As if this weren’t enough, the six episodes are rounded out by Polly’s (Helen McCrory) need for closure regarding the well-being of her lost children and Arthur’s (Paul Anderson) unpredictable mental state.

Throughout the first season, Thomas’s well-developed character struggled with his harrowing wartime experiences. This year, the threat is much more severe and deadly, and London presents Thomas with greater tension and stakes. It’s safe to say that Thomas’ character goes through a lot this year, from beatings and blackmail to high-pressure negotiations. Fortunately, the additional incorporation of pony mentor Esme (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) carries a truly necessary gentler side to his disposition through the episodes. She doesn’t have Grace’s charismatic charm, but her steely determination and curious tenacity more than make up for it and help her stand out from the other characters.

This season, the Peaky Blinders’ supporting cast gets a lot more attention, and Arthur and Polly’s stories get compelling arcs. Polly’s campaign to find her child closes mostly through the season, with a gentler side to her extreme disposition investigated interestingly, serving to add an additional layer to her character, as a matter of fact.

On the other hand, Arthur quickly spirals into chaos, putting his mental health in jeopardy for the majority of the season. This keeps getting worse until the season’s end, when his addiction to drugs gets so bad. The rest of the characters, including Sam Neill as the despicable Inspector Campbell, do a good job of keeping their previous personas, but this year’s newcomers really shine.

Noah Taylor’s Unhinged Darby Sabini gives London’s volatile criminal underworld an additional layer of unpredictability, and his iron grip on the capital is a force to be reckoned with. Thomas comes to understand this from the get-go in the season and it helps develop him as a believable danger. Alfie Solomons, a Jewish man, is this year’s wildcard and arguably the most endearing character.

Solomons gleefully skips between both sides of the conflict, perfectly injecting a sickening sense of humor, which is brought to life by an impressive performance from Tom Hardy. Tommy always has to tread carefully when interacting with these two characters, who in particular prove to be formidable opponents. Not to mention the continued presence of Inspector Campbell.

Yet again peaky Blinders works really hard rejuvenating the 1920s. The inclusion of London places a greater emphasis on bringing London to life alongside Birmingham’s filthy, poor neighborhoods. Peaky Blinders continues to impress with its set and production design, whether it’s a glitzy, prestigious club that gets into a fight or the various opening shots of London.

In general, almost every aspect of Peaky Blinders’ second season is improved. Peaky Blinders’ characters are hard to fault because this year’s cast includes several charismatic antagonists and places a greater emphasis on supporting characters. Seeing Thomas attempt to explore the dinky criminal hidden world with enemies on all side is something this subsequent season in all actuality does unimaginably well. Peaky Blinders does an excellent job of improving on the first season and once again delivering a satisfying slice of crime drama, despite the inevitable lulls in the overall narrative.
