“John Wick Chapter 4” opens with its title character (Reeves) on the run again as the villainous Powers That Be known as the High Table get in his way. The main villain of the series is the Marquis de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård), a leader of the High Table who keeps raising the bounty on Wick’s head while he also cleans up the messes left behind, including potentially eliminating Winston Scott (Ian McShane) and his part of this nefarious organization. The opening scenes take Wick to Japan, where he seeks help from the head of the Osaka Continental, Shimazu (Hiroyuki Sanada), and runs afoul of a blind High Table assassin named Caine (the badass Donnie Yen). Laurence Fishburne pops up now and then as Wick’s Q when the killer needs a new bulletproof suit, and Shamier Anderson plays an assassin who seems to be waiting for the price on Wick’s head to hit the right level for him to get his payday. More than the last couple of films, the plot here, despite the movie’s epic runtime (169 minutes), feels refreshingly focused again. This is John Wick.

And they do. Stahelski and his team build action sequences in a haunting and artistically choreographed way. When filmmakers think too much about gunfights, they often sound aloof and aimless, making them sound more genteel than essential. A good action director succeeds in filming fights in a way that doesn’t sacrifice suspense for showmanship. An action sequence from John Wick “Chapter 4” consists of lengthy fights and shootouts between Jon and dozens of people who underestimate him, but they have enough momentum to never surpass their popularity. .
The inserts are also wonderfully defined. At some point in the film, Jon and his enemies decide on the battle’s parameters such as time, weapons, and variables. But this is true for all the big action scenes, with a very clear understanding of what Jon has to do or go through to “complete the level.” A simple goal allows for complex choreography. We know what has to happen for Jon to continue like his predecessor. While many modern action movies are jam-packed with characters and complex objectives, Wick films have a purpose so brilliantly defined that they can be enjoyed within these simple structures.
Very fun. The action choreography here is just breathtaking. I loved how the world revolved around Wick and the hapless warriors. In one of the best sequences in most recent action movies (but more like the third or fourth here), Wick takes on a concocted Scott Adkins and his army of ill-fated fools in a crowded nightclub. must be confronted. Dancers hardly notice it.
Sometimes I step away to let her pass, but I never stop and stare at her. Writhing, dancing bodies create a visually imaginative backdrop as water is poured into the club. Then in one of my favorite action him sequences, Wick and his predators fight in a roundabout around the Arc de Triomphe. The car won’t stop. In fact, it feels like it’s speeding up. In the film, gunshots ring out across the city, and no one opens the windows to see what’s going on.
And then there’s what I call action geography. So many have tried to imitate the frenzied approach of the movie Bourne, but the results have often been chaotic. Great cinematographer Dan Laustsen (who regularly collaborates with Guillermo del Toro on The Shape of Water, Nightmare Alley, etc.) worked with Stahelski on the production of the film. We strive to keep the action clean, brutal and never confusing. The stunt work is phenomenal and, again, the shootouts feel more like dance choreography than the boring storylines of many studio movies.
There is so much grace and ingenuity when Wick goes about his work. Of course, a great cast also helps. Reeves may have fewer lyrical lines in this film than any of the previous films in the series, but it perfectly sells Wick’s dedication while also delivering an emotionally charged chapter that makes the chapter more serious. A feeling of fatigue is blowing into Wick. Unlike the first film’s vengeful Wick, who survived three films later, Reeves knows exactly what this character needs. Many cast members try to add unnecessary detail to already-popular characters, but Reeves is adept at fine-tuning his portrayal to fit the film.
It also allows some helpers, especially Yen and Anderson, to shine in different areas of power. The circle of legends here is great not only during battle, but also in the moments in between. Most people who know who Donnie Yen is won’t be surprised to hear that he’s a perfect fit, but he’s even better than you’d expect. Anderson also gives an entertaining performance of a man who looks like he’s just a mercenary waiting for a proper payout, but fans of the series knew from the start that this villain has a dog, and there are no puppies or people in this world. and will find that they value those they love. .
The only slight flaw in Wick’s armor here is that the narrative is a bit over the top. There are some scenes where the beat feels a bit too long, especially in the beginning, but I think the narrower version (if 150 minutes is tight) is just perfect for this movie. .
Fans won’t mind. With so much focus on what brings people to the cinema in the post-pandemic world of streaming, this is a movie to watch with a jubilant and excited audience. There’s that infectious energy we love about action movies, and whole rooms filled with people marveling at the ingenuity and intensity of what unfolds before them. It’s a movie that should be seen at high volume. John Wick fought hard for it.
