Over the course of its history, Peaky Blinders has endured quite a bumpy ride. Some would argue that the previous few seasons have moved into more hedonistic and ethereal territory, prioritizing visuals and cinematography over exciting stand-offs and large-scale action sequences. What’s more, they’re surely not off-base. In point of fact, season 6 of any television series exemplifies this imbalance.
Without getting a lot into spoilers, those after a goal that wraps up without question, all that here will be frustrated. The final 81 minutes of this season feel more like an appetizer than anything else because a movie has already been confirmed and there are a lot of loose ends leading up to that.

However, the story of Season 6 begins with the Shelby family completely broken. The series enters a state of mourning following the tragic death of Polly Shelby’s actress, Helen McCrory, as Tommy is teased by Captain Swing about the terrible blow their family has received. Polly has passed away, Arthur has once more jumped into the deep end, and Tommy is a wreck and on the verge of suicide.
In point of fact, Tommy emerged from the mist at the end of season 5 with a gun to his head, signaling the beginning of season 6. Tommy eventually gathers whatever resources he has left to attempt to retaliate with the fascists who have entered the fray and the evil, twisted Oswald who is still on the loose. Sadly, the family is dealing with yet another tragedy, so that’s easier said than done.
To make matters even more complicated, Michael sets out to get revenge on Tommy by blaming Tommy for the death of his mother and is determined to eliminate Thomas once and for all.
This contention typifies the majority of this season, which is definitely more trippy and dreamlike than any of the past ones. Tragically, it likewise loses a considerable measure of spotlight on the outside struggle to twofold down on Tommy’s internal devils. This has been portrayed by the show since the first season, but this time around it feels a little scattered, which I suppose is representative of the overall theme of season 6.
I won’t give away any spoilers, but certain characters are introduced, but they are never used well. For instance, Jack Nelson is introduced as a major antagonist but never really receives much of a resolution. It’s impossible to tell if the writers were hoping for him in the movie, but it doesn’t help the writing here in the least. In addition, a brand-new character with ties to Tommy is introduced, which honestly feels like a free pass for writers’ block.
The individual episodes are enjoyable to watch, but when viewed as a whole, the flaws really stand out. With yet another addiction subplot, characters like Arthur fall back into old habits, and Ada only gets a few funny lines of dialogue. With the benefit of hindsight, it is simple to identify this year’s shortcomings.
The sixth season of Peaky Blinders is watchable, but it is by far the weakest of the six. Given the ratings given to the individual episodes, I imagine a few of you are confused by the negative tone. However, Peaky Blinders simply does not compare to other television shows released this year. The Shelby family fails to rise to the occasion despite a rather blinding conclusion, which is regrettable.
