Peaky Blinders’ fifth season is going to be the most controversial for viewers. The most recent season of Peaky Blinders is both the strongest and weakest of the five individual stories. It has a perspective that is more introverted and prioritizes style and aesthetic choices over intense action. Shuffling a few sub plots and two bad guys, BBC’s productive wrongdoing dramatization feels like a show that is making a solid attempt to take special care of everybody except neglecting to truly light as much energy as it ought to. All of these stories collide, with Tommy struggling with his own sanity, Arthur’s inner demons reappearing, and a couple of convenient plot devices used later, leading to a major mystery at the season finale’s climax. Across the six episodes there’s a truckload continuing and regardless of great importance long cuts of show advancing everything as soon a possible, when you contrast this season with what’s preceded, Season 5 feels like it has all in all too much going on.
There are, in essence, three primary narratives at play here: the reemergence of Tommy’s inner demons following the collapse of Wall Street; the Billy Boys, who are fighting off the Peaky Blinders and Mosley’s power in politics. This is in addition to the many different characters featured in the episodes and their associated subplots. It’s also a lot of drama, and the comedy that made the previous seasons so balanced is nowhere to be found here. This is the Peaky Blinders season that will cause the most controversy among viewers.
Peaky Blinders has always had strong camerawork and scene composition, but Season 5 takes that to the next level with a lot of montage segments, slow-motion shots, and symbolism. If you watch the episodes consecutively, this may appear to be interfering with the main plot at times, but the show has always treaded a fine line between the two, so it is not a major issue here.
Even so, Peaky Blinders continues to offer an impressive selection of drama, action, and visually appealing episodes. For a lot of the season, Solomon’s maniacal quips and unpredictability felt like the missing ingredient, but Mosley’s deliciously dark presence should be enough to get you through to the end. Peaky Blinders concludes with another strong season, despite the likelihood that it will be the most divisive in the show’s history, with a sixth season already confirmed and all six episodes here exciting and well-paced.
