In the role, Murphy exudes charisma. He is consistently the predominant power at whatever point on screen, and difficult to take your eyes off when he is engaged with the activity. However, Murphy is not the only focus of this initial episode. Sam Neill, Helen McCrory, Annabelle Wallis, and Iddo Goldberg stand out for how quickly and effectively it establishes the world and core group of characters. Neill’s strong Monitor Campbell gives the best danger to the Peaky Blinders outfit, and Neill produces the ideal harmony between power and criticism.

The events of this first episode are dominated by the Great War, as one would expect from a drama set in 1919. Danny Whizz-Bang, a local man agitated by shell shock, is one of the characters whose lives have clearly been altered by the war. Why I think Peaky Blinders will be a great movie is pretty much summed up by the music choices. It is trying, and all the more critically, loads of tomfoolery. Peaky Blinders is substantial and complex viewing, so do not be deceived. However, it manages to strike a balance between that and a great sense of style and verve. That’s a tremendously impressive start, and I hope the series continues to live up to it.
