Peaky Blinders returns for its fourth season with six action-packed, dramatic episodes that surpass the show’s previous standards. The Peaky Blinders face their most difficult challenge yet, the Italian mafia, in a story that draws on events from previous seasons.
Where we left off last year, the story continues. Following Tommy’s selling out of the family, the dispersed leftovers of the Peaky Blinders all wind up in prison, anticipating their destiny. The fractured family reluctantly agrees to team up once more as a new enemy enters the game after a particularly dramatic first episode. Mafia contract killer Luca Changretta. The Peaky Blinders and Luca’s gang fight, resulting in casualties on both sides, thirsty for blood and settling a personal vendetta that dates back to the first season of the show.

An interesting social issue is brought up during Tommy’s war, but it doesn’t come up much until very late in the season. Jessie Eden, a communist and political activist, confronts Tommy regarding worker rights and demands that he provide men and women with equal pay. After a particularly tense meeting, the workers’ threat of a strike puts Shelby Ltd. in jeopardy and escalates to a serious situation.
Peaky Blinders is a crime thriller that succeeds in part because of its unwavering attention to detail and the exquisitely shot film. Peaky Blinders excels in every way, from the creative use of color to the intriguing twisting of the song’s main theme into a variety of genres across the six episodes. The show’s soundtrack has always been varied, but the fourth season goes one step further by providing a wide range of songs and genres that complement the action on screen.
If the acting wasn’t on point with the story and aesthetic, all of Peaky Blinders’ great work would be meaningless. The fourth season demonstrates the breadth of the acting talent on display with more in-depth character development and an examination of our three lead characters. There is a real maturity and range displayed here that is unmatched in other crime thrillers of its kind, from Cillian Murphy’s conflicted portrayal of Tommy to Paul Anderson’s masterful execution of Arthur, a man walking a tightrope between being sane and insane.
Aunt Polly, played by Helen McCrory, has a compelling character arc this year as well. Her character faces a variety of mental and physical challenges this year as a result of staring death in the face. From attempting to protect Michael from Changretta’s posse to defeating her own nervousness and shock after practically biting the dust, her personality goes through an incredible change throughout six episodes.
Seeing where Peaky Blinders goes from here will be very interesting. With the general plot including Changretta everything except settled, many inquiries loom over the destiny of our characters going ahead. The open completion is a fascinating decision as well, one that looks set to steer the show in an entirely different heading into its fifth season. We are in for a real treat if Peaky Blinders can maintain the masterful execution it has achieved here.
