Peaky Blinders returns for a third outing at the criminal underworld, still reeling from the explosive second season finale. The plot, which has a darker tone and a story that is far more ambitious, feels like it could get out of hand at times, but it manages to stay together until the dramatic end. Because he dabbles in Russian affairs, Tommy spends a lot of the season in way over his head.
Instead of taking the lead, he spends a lot of the six episodes reeling and trying to catch up to a clever group of people who are determined to outwit him at every opportunity. This, in many ways, sets the tone for a lot of the season, with a little humor at the beginning to try to lighten the mood.

Thomas Shelby’s marriage marks the beginning of the tale. Last year left question marks around which lady he planned to pick however we’re left without any questions right off the bat. He has wed Grace, and with their son Charlie, it appears that they will live happily ever after. That is, that is, until Father John Hughes, a despicable Irish priest, and the perilous Russians get Tommy involved. Overwhelmed by the brand-new, perilous world in which they have found themselves, Tommy and the Shelby family struggle to maintain control of the proceedings from this location. The Russians pose a unique threat to the family, and each of the main members of the family suffers unimaginable losses along the way.
While last year fiddled with the supporting cast individuals significantly more, this third season invests considerably more energy figuring out these characters’ subplots. Presently wedded and committed to the Holy book, Arthur continually winds up doing combating his obligation to the family with his familial ties. After falling in love with a painter who makes her feel like she’s in a relationship, Polly is having trouble figuring out her purpose in life.
Michael learns about Father John Hughes and commitments to stop his mischievous behavior while John begins to set up a good foundation for himself more as a fundamental player in the family. The main plot, which has Tommy at his breaking point for the majority of the season, is intertwined with all of these storylines. Even during one of the more intense episodes, he was struggling with a severe head injury and was close to death.
All of this comes to a dramatic conclusion that rivals the one seen last year. These concluding scenes are one thing Peaky Blinders does exceptionally well. The third season is no exemption. The episode features a race against time and a few impressive shots and editing, ending with the door wide open for the subsequent fourth season. The stakes are higher than they have ever been before.
The third season of Peaky Blinders has a deeper arc than we’re used to seeing from the Birmingham street gang and is much more thought-provoking than previous seasons. The Shelbys are in over their heads when they get into a fight for their lives, and the finale is likely to make many fans salivate in anticipation of the fourth season.
The characters are too composed as they’ve at any point been, acted flawlessly by the cast with Arthur and Polly showing significantly more profundity in their reach than any other time. Peaky Blinders continues to impress with its 1920s crime epic, despite the fact that the second season felt a little less tight in the writing department than the third.
