Manoj Vajpayee plays the righteous and devout Solanki well, injecting humor and nuance, emphasizing dull, understated scenes and bridging loopholes in a way that only he can. Deepak Kingrani, who wrote the story, screenplay and dialogue for this film, deserves credit for not portraying Solanki as a stereotypical Bollywood savior that our films can’t get enough of. Our protagonist is not a hero. He’s weak and frail, a normal person who gets scared and upset in the presence of a prominent lawyer and can’t help but be a fanboy. Wearing a new shirt before an important hearing, he is so nervous that he forgets to remove his price tag.
A devout Shiva devotee, he says his prayers every morning and before making a final statement on the most important events of his career, carefully drawn from Hindu mythology. It aptly concludes with a moving allegory. While the film always tries to demean him, Vajpayee does a great job of humanizing Solanki, who actually acted as a survivor’s agent in the Assalamu rape case. His Marwari accent strays from time to time, but Vajpayee’s on-screen presence is so strong that it’s easy to miss. Surf Ek Bandar Kafi Hai is the most convincing on the court and focuses on what Solanki does best.

I love how the film portrays defendant attorneys as men at work instead of disrespecting them. It’s also subtle enough to indicate a brief friendship between co-workers who have known each other for years, even if they were on opposite sides on certain issues. Solanki deliberately jokes with lawyer Baba of the Jodhpur Judge’s Court, as old acquaintances often do.

But every time the film leaves the courtroom, it sags and cracks appear so big that even Vajpayee can’t hide it. For example, his background music by Sandeep Chowta. Melodramatic and over the top, it does exactly what it shouldn’t. In other words, tell them how you want them to feel. And then there’s the imagination of Solanki and his son calling each other friends. Every time they do that, it only shakes the roots that Bajpayee is trying so hard to make the film stick. Manufacturers also neglect certain important details. For example, the case lasts five years, during which Solanki’s son did not grow up at all. Our lawyers don’t age either.
Furthermore, Saaf Ek Bandar Kafi Hai is so obsessed with its protagonist that it pushes the story of the survivor into the background. Her story doesn’t give you goosebumps, nor does it deserve it. In 2013, I visited the popular Baba Ashram on the outskirts of Bangalore for a mission. Filled with shady characters and accented with remote and spooky ashram grounds, the whole getaway drama was as thrilling as a real crime documentary.
I came home with a great story, but the experience haunted me for months. Even when it comes to impostors exploiting faith and fear in the name of religion and public good, Saaf Ek Bandar Kafi Hai has none of the sharpness or atmosphere that is characteristic and essential to telling such stories. Instead of what should have been a raging river, the film depicts a roadside pond that could easily be mistaken for a large ditch.
The film’s title and opening hip-hop song, “Rab Ka Banda,” also doesn’t do him any favors. Not only is the title terrible, it’s also wrong. Surf Ek Bandar Kafi Hai really wants you to believe, one man is never enough. You always need a village to get something important done. In this particular case, Solanki certainly contributed, but without the courage of the survivor, the perseverance of his parents, the POCSO law, the witnesses who came forward, and many precious sentences, Baba would not have been imprisoned for life. would have been Setting the right precedent got the ball rolling and Solanki was able to help push it further.
